From oral literature to written forms, from fairy tales to horror stories, fictional narrative is a fundamental literary mode, present in all cultures and eras. What makes a story fascinating? How is it possible for reading to thrill our senses, awaken our imagination and nourish our intellect?
In this course you will get familiar with the essential elements of storytelling from a literary theoretical approach, learning to 'decode' a written story while reading a variety of genres.

To develop strategies and acquire techniques to understand complex literary texts and to express their own ideas and emotions through literary language.
Content
From oral literature to written forms, from fairy tales to horror stories, fictional narrative is a fundamental literary mode, present in all cultures and eras. The essential elements of storytelling from a literary theoretical approach, with the aim to discover what is it that makes a story attractive and what are the tricks fiction writers use to capture our attention and thrill our senses and imagination. With the aim of learning to decode a written story, working with relevant texts from the history of literature as well as with promising texts of contemporary literature, experimenting with creative writing.
Learning outcomes
is able to identify the main elements and themes of a literary text (as well as the author_’s intention); can take on a variety of narration’s subgenera (horror, romantic, fantasy, etc.) and identify their characteristics; is able to criticize a text applying aesthetic reasoning; can produce a text with clear literary intent.

Graduation requirements
The course consists of ten contact modules. At the beginning of each module there will be a theoretical problem and an activity to be solved either in groups or individually. This activity will be based on a series of readings that the student must have done independently, before the class session. Each module ends with a group discussion based on the activity and previous readings. The student will participate in the discussions and do the readings and homework to complete the course, as well as deliver their final project on time.
